I always felt there are two types of failures.
Tried and failed
Tried persistently and withdrew
I am not going to talk about people who just try and fail. I somehow have a very firm belief ‘Nothing can fail if the try’ is based on determination and persistence. Success surely comes by, it is only the question of sooner or later. I want to talk on the second failure ‘Tried Persistently and withdrew’.
This is generally because of the thought ‘Success is not visible’. We begin so well, but never finish well… we give up.
Few days back, I happen to meet a family of a friend who ended his life because he concluded he failed. He thought he had failed because he could not taste success, he thought he failed because persistence brought result that did not look like success.
He gave up one day. Not only did he give up his dreams and aspiration but his life too. It is close to 5 years now, the impact of his giving up was greater when I looked at his 6 year old son, who smiled at me, with his eyes “You are my papa’s friend” I felt a little odd and ashamed to say ‘yes’. During our talk his wife said “if only he struggled for another 4 months.. the story would have been different”. Ya how true, how many times we have people just giving up when ‘a little more’, ‘another step’ would have landed them to taste success.
Why try persistently and give up?
“Why not try persistently and keep trying persistently till the time ‘success’ is ashamed of hiding from you”
I remember the cute lines in “Don’t Quit” by some one so brilliant that we don’t know the name…. you can never tell how close you are; Stick to the fight when you are hardest hit.
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest! if you must; but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow;
You might succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out;
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit;
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.
